The Wapping Group of Artists
This society arose from informal meetings of the Artists Society and the Langham Sketch Club who regularly painted on the Thames in the late 1930's. It was formally inaugarated in 1946 with the aim of documenting the changing face of Londons river and comprises of a maximum of 25 active painters. More recently its scope has been extended to take in the rivers of Kent and Essex which flow into the Thames Estuary to maintain the scope of subject matter.
The group meets every week from April to September at a variety of locations, and generates a wide variety of interpretations of each venue. I was elected to full membership of the group in 2000 and many of the paintings you see in my gallery were produced on the Wapping Group painting programme.
